(This post is from an email conversation with a friend. I thought the content might be useful for others.)
The last two times I was in the area I saw the packed parking lot at Upper Antelope and just kept driving a few miles farther from Page to Canyon X. I was either completely alone or with one or two other photographers. Given that there are two different canyons to explore there, then you really have all the room and time you need. And there are some good shots to be had.
Last week I was talking with a pro friend of mine who lives in southern Utah and shoots the area frequently. He said Upper Antelope has stopped doing the photography tours completely. Can’t confirm. It’s too bad. But the last photography tour I did there was nearly a waste, as there were too many photographers in the group, and we had seconds to shoot before the throngs were released to walk into view.
Canyon X is definitely my go-to for an easy slot canyon these days. My friend told me about other great ones to visit that take a bit more effort to get there, but are therefore completely empty. I’ll meet up with him next time and try a few of those.
Since you’ll be close, hopefully you can visit Monument Valley and run up to Goosenecks. Next time in the area I’m also hoping to drive up into Valley of the Gods which is very close, as I’ve heard good things.
And also +1 on the dust if you go to Antelope. All the people walking around plus the guides throwing up sand makes it really bad. (Not so bad at X, though.) DEFINITELY put on whatever lens you plan on using in your vehicle before even getting out to walk up to the concession and don’t change until back in the car after blowing all the dust off outside. I think I’ve always used either 14-24 or 16-35 and been able to get most of what I wanted. It’s mostly tight spaces.
Most of all, have fun!!!
